Farm Pets

From left to right – Ladybug, Smudge, Heinz, Sugar, Marie and Stormy.

Here my cats are sunning themselves on their couch in the combine shed outside.  Marie is the Mother to all of them except Stormy.  Ladybug is three years old, Heinz is two years old and the twins Smudge and Sugar are 7 months old.  They were born late in the season last year and I wasn’t sure they were going to make it, but they did.  Smudge and Sugar are very rambunctious, although you can’t tell from this picture.

Sugar and Smudge when they were still in their kitten stage.  As you can see Sugar is the shy one of the two.

Here is my dog Jaxx.  She will be 7 years old next month.  She loves the winter.  Jaxx chases snow, eats snow, rolls in the snow and jumps in the snow, basically anything involving snow.  If it were her choice she would live in the arctic, I think.  When the weather starts getting warm and the snow melts she will hunt out any little snow still left in the yard and lay in it.  Often there will be one little pile left somewhere only 2 feet by 1 foot big and she will sleep on it during the day, as if she thinks that she can save if from melting by covering it with her body.

This is a view off the deck towards the combine shed.  The dog and the cats have houses nestled in straw that are in the shed.  This picture was taken about a month earlier.  Some of our snow has melted, but this is pretty close to how much we have left.  The shed is called the combine shed because during the 40’s and 50’s the combine was parked in there.  The farm I live on has been in the family over 100 years, so there are some remnants of the past still hanging around.

  1. Thanks for the beautiful photos and stories. I love the light levels you captured in the shot of the combine shed. If we were more like Jaxx we would certainly not mind winter hanging on like it is.
